Welcome to Chellaston
Bowls Club.
We are a community club where new members are always welcome,
both experienced players and newcomers to the game. For those
who have not played before the Club has bowls available for
loan, and will provide experienced players to give introductory
coaching.
We have teams that participate in local leagues, and there
is also social bowling both informally and through a programme
of competitions and events. During the winter season, the
Club continues to hold regular meetings.
Sunday and Wednesday afternoons see indoor short mat bowling;
cards and dominoes are played on Tuesday afternoons.
There is a programme of social evenings on alternate Fridays
open to members and friends. We also hold fayres, quizzes,
bonus ball lottery and regular raffles

Update
We are delighted to be able to start the New Year
on a positive note. The insurance building work on the clubhouse
is now complete, and we are in the process of putting everything
back together to enable us to use the facilities again. Would you
please note the following dates and support us in whatever way you
can:
Sunday 15th and Wednesday 18th January: Indoor
Bowling afternoons (2pm) restart.
Friday evening social calendar to be discussed at above; as yet
no dates or activities have been fixed.
Monday 16th January: Men's Meeting provisional
date, evening. Jim Wright (738131 or jmwright1950@yahoo.co.uk) is
arranging. This is important as teams and captains must be sorted.
Saturday 17th March: Chellaston 2012, a community event
organised by Chellaston Residents' Association, 11am - 4pm at Chellaston
Academy (senior school). We are having a display area and setting
up our indoor bowls mat. Please will you volunteer to help out on
the day. John Mc is to put up a rota sheet in the clubhouse and/or
please contact him (701745 or j.b.mccormick@btinternet.com). We
need to use this opportunity to promote CBC, hopefully encourage
new membership, and to promote the following week's........................................
Saturday 24th March: Spring Fayre. This our alternative
autumn fayre and needs full support from everyone. John Mc is preparing
raffle tickets. Please have them from him and do your best to sell
as many as possible. Also we need your donations for raffle, tombola,
gifts, cakes, etc. These (apart from cakes!) may be left at the
clubhouse from Jan 15th.
Good Friday 6th April: Fun Day Weather permitting
this will mark in our usual fashion the start of the bowling season.
This is an informal day, starting in the morning with hot cross
buns, and progressing through the day with bowling between eating.
Watch the Notice Board for full details.
Wed 11th April: Open Evening with invitations to
go to local community groups and posters/fliers displayed, to promote
CBC and encourage new membership. Your involvement would be appreciated

Club Directors for 2011 are:-
Directions to the Club
Our Club is situated on Swarkestone Road, behind the Catholic
Church which lies between the Rose and Crown and Chellaston
School. The entrance track is at the far corner of the church
car park, and you will see our St George’s flag flying.
History of the Club
The oldest surviving social organisation in Chellaston is
the crown green bowling club which began in February 1905
after the offer of a piece of land from a Mr Pakeman for a
bowling green “50 yards by 50 yards in Station Road,
at a rental of £3.0.0d per annum, with a lease of 10
years, occupation for the first year free”.
The green was ready and opened by the local vicar and Mr
Pakeman on April 22, 1905, with the title of The Chellaston
& District Bowls Club. This survived for 19 years, mainly
because of the dedication of a few enthusiasts who saw the
need for a club in the first place and set the pattern of
management upon which the club was established.
When the sale of the land was threatened in 1924, the committee
purchased it for £125 and set up a limited liability
company named Chellaston Bowls Club Limited, and this still
exists today. A wooden pavilion was purchased in 1971 to replace
an old railway coach. In 1994 a brick extension was added
to include a bar, cool room and toilets. During 2008/9 we
have now rebuilt and extended the structure in brick. |
